NSSThe National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student's personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities working for a campus-community linkage MottoThe Motto of NSS is "Not Me but You", that reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrine in this motto, which underlines the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society. According to NSS essence several extension and outreach programs conducted in collaboration with industry, community and Non- Government Organizations through NSS at Baruipur College. Extension and Outreach Programs Organized by NSS (2018 - 2023) 1. RELIEF FUND RAISING FOR FLOOD IN KERALA:DATE: 4TH SEPTEMBER, 2018 Devastated flood affected about one sixth of populace of Kerala on 16th August 2018 due to unusually high rainfall. Fund raising started in all the states including West Bengal to help the flood affected populace. As a part of this mission, NSS UNIT of Baruipur College took initiative to raise fund. NSS volunteers went door to door in the Baruipur market area to raise fund. The fund raised was sent to the chief minister’s relief fund. MEMORY TESTING AND AUGMENTATION WORKSHOP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOL:DATE: 27TH FEBRUARY, 2019 MEMORY TESTING AND AUGMENTATION WORKSHOP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOL 3. DRIVE AWAY DENGUE PROGRAM AT PURANDARPUR VILLAGE:DATE: 1st March, 2019 Massive number of people were affected by dengue in 2019 and the state government took various initiatives to raise awareness among the common people of the state to check the outbreak of the disease. The NSS unit of Baruipur College also took initiative to raise awareness among the villagers regarding the measures to be taken to reduce the chances of outbreak of dengue in the area. The NSS volunteers went door to door in the Purandarpur village to make them aware of the measures to be taken at the household level to reduce the spread of the disease. DOOR-TO-DOOR DENGUE AWARENESS PROGRAMME BY NSS – 01.03.2019 4. EYE CHECKUP CAMP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOLDATE: 2nd March, 2019 Free eye check-up camp for the common villagers and the school children were organized by the NSS unit of Baruipur College at the Purandarpur village primary school. The villagers from Purandarpur village came in the camp for eye check-up and they were checked by the trained ophthalmologists and got information regarding eye power and other problems and necessary suggestions for the treatment. NSS volunteers participated actively in organizing the workshop. EYE CHECKUP CAMP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOL – 02.03.2019 5. PLASTIC FREE VILLAGE DRIVEDATE: 3rd March, 2019 NSS volunteers of Baruipur College together with the village youths took initiative to make the common use areas of Purandarpur village plastic waste free. They had cleaned the areas like road sides, pond embankments, temple ground, playground etc. and also raised awareness among the common villagers so that they stop disposing plastics outside the specific garbage disposal areas. PLASTIC FREE VILLAGE DRIVE – 03.03.2019 6. WASTE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOLDATE: 3rd March, 2019 The NSS unit of Baruipur college in collaboration with Resolve Trash to Cash, a Kolkata based organization working on solid waste management, organized a workshop at the Purandarpur village primary school with the village youths to raise awareness regarding necessity of solid and liquid waste management and good practices regarding the waste management that can be practiced at household level to reduce the adverse effects of toxic wastes. Besides, the youths were also made aware of the recycling, reuse of solid waste at household level and necessity and means of reducing the waste in day to day life. WASTE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP AT PURANDARPUR PRIMARY SCHOOL – 03.03.2019 7. DENGUE AWARENESS PROGRAMDATE: 30th March, 2019 The NSS volunteers of Baruipur college took initiative to raise awareness among the village youths and common people of Purandarpur and Biral village to check spread of dengue in the surrounding villages. The NSS volunteers distributed leaflets and pictorial information indicating ‘Dos and don’ts’ written in regional language (Bengali) to be followed at household level to reduce dengue. Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign: PLASTIC FREE VILLAGE CAMPAIGN:DATE: 10TH TO 17TH SEPTEMBER, 2019 A team consisting of faculty members and students of Baruipur College visited the surrounding villages of Bruipur College (UTTAR KALYANPUR, KHASMALLIK, SALIPUR, HARIHARPUR, and BAIKUNTHAPUR) to conduct the ‘Plastic Free Village Campaign’ directed by the Dept. of MHRD. The team visited the households and argued about the awareness regarding the environmental dangers of the use of synthetic and plastic bags and other materials which can cause heavy degradation of the environment. The team meet the villagers and consulted with them about this very significant topic. The student volunteers also collected waste plastic samples from the households as well as from the neighbouring streets and open areas also. The necessity of the use of cloth bags have also been delivered to the local villagers and cloth bags were also been distributed in several households. Webinar on National Education Policy (NEP) SensitizationDATE: 23.09.2020 A webinar aimed at sensitizing students about the National Education Policy (NEP) was successfully organized on 23rd September 2020. Hosted in response to the recent implementation of NEP, the event sought to elucidate its key provisions and implications for students. NSS volunteers along with NSS Coordinator. The webinar commenced with an introductory address by the Principal, outlining the significance of NEP in shaping the future of education in India. Distinguished speakers, including, Dr Pallab Bhowmik, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Sundarban Mahavidyalaya and Dr. Durga Ganguly, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Baruipur College, shared insights into the fundamental principles and objectives of NEP, emphasizing its transformative potential in fostering holistic development and enhancing educational quality. Considering the Covid-19 restrictions the webinar was very successful with a call to action, urging students to embrace the ethos of NEP and contribute towards realizing its vision of a vibrant and inclusive education system. *During 2020-21 Session very few community extension and outreach programs could be organised due to restrictions imposed by Government Orders related to Covid-19 pandemic. 10. RTI Awareness CampDATE: 26.03.2022 On 26th March 2022, the NSS volunteers conducted sanitization of the college campus and surrounding area and also interacted with the local villagers and talked about the importance of personal hygiene and sanitization. After lunch break Dr. Gopal Chakraborty, Jt. Director, Higher Education Department, Bikash Bhavan, delivered lecture on the topic Right to Information (RTI) to students and teachers. 11. Diabetes Awareness SessionDATE: 28.03.2022 On 28th March 2022, as part of the morning session, NSS volunteers were engaged in cleaning the college campus and surrounding area and also sanitized the locality as per prevailing Covid-19 regulations. In the afternoon session Dr. B.B. Bari delivered an invited lecture on the topic “Therapies and lifestyle changes for diabetes”. 12. Session on Cancer and its preventionDATE: 29.03.2022 On 29th March 2022, NSS volunteers conducted a survey of local villagers about the different diseases and after lunch break Sri Kallol Ghosh, Director Samaj Unnayan Kendra conducted an awareness workshop on cancer and its prevention. 13. Session on Consumer Protection ActDATE: 30.03.2022 On 30th March 2022, as part of the morning session, The NSS volunteers conducted door-to-door survey and awareness session regarding the waste management status at household level in the village and in the afternoon session an workshop on “Consumer Protection Act” was conducted by Mr. A. Das the Assistant Director of Consumer Affairs, Regional Office, Baruipur. 14. Awareness Camp on E-Waste ManagementDATE: 23.09.2022 On 23/09/22 the NSS Unit of Baruipur College organized an Awareness Camp on E-Waste Management in collaboration with Hulladek, a leading waste management company, licensed by the Central Pollution Control Board. The NSS volunteers along with many other students of the college participated enthusiastically in this camp. The resource persons provided by Hulladek delivered lecture on various aspects of E-waste management, its role in reducing environmental pollution and interacted with the students attending the programme. The camp left visible impact on the students behaviour towards e-waste. 15. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
DATE: 15.05.2023 The NSS Unit of Baruipur College organized a camp on domestic violence to celebrate International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 15/05/23. The Officer-in-Charge of Baruipur Women Police Station was the resource person in this programme. She mentioned many instances of domestic violence which she investigated in her capacity as a police officer and highlighted the legal safeguard against such violence. 16. Cleanliness Drive
