Anti-Ragging Cell

Baruipur College adopts zero tolerance policy to ragging. Accordingly, the college follows the rules and regulations laid down b y several authorities like, UGC and the Central and State Governments from time to time. The college organises anti- ragging awareness programmes, displays anti-ragging posters in the strategic points in the campus.  In strict compliance with the anti-ragging guidelines laid down by the competent authorities, the college has reconstituted the anti-ragging committee. Ragging is Crime

UGC Anti- Ragging Regulation, 2009

What is Ragging?

Any conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the  effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging  in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or junior student or asking the students to do any act or  perform something which such student will not perform in the ordinary course  and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or  embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or junior student.

Punishable Ingredients of Ragging:

• Abetment to ragging

• Criminal conspiracy to rag

• Unlawful assembly and rioting while ragging

• Public nuisance created during ragging

• Injury to body, causing hurt or grievous hurt

• Wrongful restraint

• Wrongful confinement

• Use of criminal force

• Assault as well as sexual offences or unnatural offences

• Extortion

• Criminal trespass

• Offences against property

• Criminal intimidation

• Attempt to commit any or all of the above mentioned offences against the victim(s)

• Physical or psychological humiliation

• All other offences following the definition of ragging.

Punishments (at Institutional Level):

Depending upon the nature and gravity of the offence as established by the AntiRagging Committee of the institution, the possible punishments for those guilty of ragging at the institutional level shall be any one or any combination of the following:

• Suspension from classes or academic privileges

• Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/ fellowship and other benefits

• Debarring from appearing in any test/ examination or other evaluation process

• Withholding results

• Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet , youth festival etc.

• Cancellation of admission

• Rustication from the institution for period ranging for 1 to 4 semesters

• Expulsion from the institution and the consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specific period

• Fine ranging between Rs. 25,000/- and Rs.1 lakh

• Collective punishment: When the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment

Mechanism of Redressal adopted by Anti-ragging Cell, Baruipur College

  • Any student who feels wronged may bring up the grievance with the mentor of any faculty members of the concerned discipline. Following the student’s reporting the concerned instructor will investigate the fact/s attempt to find a solution within a week.
  • If a student’s concern is not addressed, it needs to be brought to the attention of the Anti-ragging Committee.
  • The complainant may use either the drop box installed in the campus for submitting the complaint in writing or can contact any of the committee members.
  • Following receipt of the grievance the concerned committee will review, inspect and discuss the matter with the college authority and will try to find out an effective or feasible solution.
  • The convenor of the contact the disgruntled student, if necessary, for any inquiry.
